The Washington DC fly-in, April 16 – 18, 2008 was a great success. This trip gave members the opportunity to meet with their representatives and engage in dialogue on issues affecting their businesses. Drawing from member input, LP staff developed policy statements on a variety of topics including community and economic development, transportation, immigration, healthcare and energy. Members left with a more thorough understanding of a wide range of policy issues and political perspectives.
Chamber members were able to sit down with Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison, catch up with Senator John Cornyn between votes and eat ribs with Representative Louie Gohmert - who cooked them himself! Representative Gohmert also directed the group on a late night private tour through the halls of Congress. While in DC, trip-goers also met with Carol Edwards from the Federal Highway Administration; Francis Bourne with AMTRAK; Kathleen Black from Representative Sam Johnson’s office; Dr. Darren Molont from the Office of Fossil Energy; and TC Roberge from the American Medical Association.
