Local Students Serve as “Page for a Day” in Austin

Two local students had the opportunity to serve a day as pages to area state representatives during the East   Texas Coalition’s recent trip to Austin, comprised of the Longview, Kilgore, and Tyler Chambers of Commerce.

Carolyn Hale, the daughter of Cliff and Nancy Hale and a seventh grader at Hallsville Junior High School, followed State Representative Trent Ashby for a day.  Representative Ashby and Cliff Hale were high-school classmates.  Carolyn went on the House floor on a recent weekday morning.

“I watched them vote on a bill, and then different representatives introduced people from their districts,” Carolyn said.  She shadowed Ashby for most of the day.  “I thought it was very fun and interesting to see how everything works in the Legislature.”  While Carolyn is not sure she will pursue a political career, her time as a page “gave me an idea of what it’s like.”

Emma Rogers, the daughter of Bo and Stacie Rogers and a seventh grader at Christian Heritage School, followed State Representative Jay Dean on the same day.  She said she got to see places in the Capitol most people don’t see, such as a lounge off the House floor where Representative Dean gave her a bowl of Blue Bell ice cream.  She ran errands with the sergeant at arms, helped distribute Mardi Gras beads, and had lunch in Representative Dean’s office.

“The legislative director gave me a whole politics lesson,” Emma said, explaining how the Legislature came to have two chambers of very different sizes.  She is interested in becoming a pediatric neurosurgeon and was introduced to State Representative Dr. Greg Bonnen, who is a neurosurgeon.
